Cefn Fforest Podcast Link School

Cefn Fforest is a school in Wales that we have linked to with our podcasting. Their class, 3H, has sent us some photos and letters introducing themselves as well as a Welsh Teddy for us to share in the classroom and a geocache Travelling Ted that we are taking photos of as he has adventures in Nelson. When it has visited all of the places in Nelson that we want to send it to we will send it on to another school in another part of the world. We will still be able to track it as there is a web site where we can follow its progress because it is wearing an electronic tracking number.

Here is a picture of Jamie opening the package from Wales. Here is a photo of Jamie discovering the CD from Cefn Fforest School in Wales. They are the school that we met on-line when we were podacsting. They podcast as well.
This is Ruby holding the travel bug. We are going to follow this travel bug as it goes to all of the countries around the world. We will send it on its way after it has had a look around our school and Nelson.

School Athletics

On Wednesday we had school athletics. It started 10.15am and ended at 12.30pm. We did high-jump, long-jump, hurdles, discus, sprints and long distance. At the end we had a house group relay and a parent/teacher/kid relay. Redwood won the house group relay and the parents won the other relay.
Here is a picture of Torbea jumping over the high jump.

Fireworks art

Wow!!! What great Guy Fawkes artwork we've created!! For poetry on Monday we had a poem about fireworks and we made some artwork about it.

To make them all you need to do is get a white piece of A4 computer paper, colour all of it in with different colours and paint all of it black.

Then wait until it's dry and scratch away some of the black paint to make a shape like a fireworks display.

Then you will have your very own picture of a fireworks display!!!

Suter Art Gallery

We had a class trip to the Art Gallery to study the works of Nelson artist, Jane Evans.

Brittany is at the Suter Art Gallery. She was working hard at sketching her picture of a girl.

Tyler is painting a beautiful painting of himself playing stiff candle. He is running along fast.

Jamie is drawing a picture in the Suter Art Gallery. He is using his skill.

After we went to the art gallery we walked through town to the Visitors' Centre. Fynn is posing by this bone at the iSite Visitors' Centre.

Two New Podcasts

We had the pleasure of being able to interview Dean Schneider, a New Zealand nature photographer, who had come to visit with us for an afternoon to learn more about the sorts of things we are doing with computers in our classroom. We were surprised to learn that Dean had taken the photographs for the school reader 'Helping the Hoiho' which was Dillon's favourite when he was younger. I think all NZ children would recognise that book.

To listen to our podcasts you can either click on this badge below or click on the link in the side bar.

We have been doing some great digital poetry. Digital poetry is when you write a poem and then take photos to illustrate your poem. We would have liked to make the photos move but some of the laptops were playing up. Gloria and Georgia did a great job of their poem about all the wonderful things Mrs Murphy does to help us around the school.

The Great Nelson Trolley Race

Kakapo Reading Group was asked to write a quick newspaper report about a Nelson Trolley Race. By chance I had a visit from another keen blogger teacher from Mapua

Room One at Mapua's blog

who lead me to this cool web tool that allows you to make a report look like the real thing. How is that for 'just in time learning'!

Halves

Our new topic for maths is fractions and we are starting with halves and we had to write out a question that the answer is half and this is one.

If I had two apples and I ate three halves how much would I have left?

Here is another one.

How much pizza would you have left if you ate two quarters?

Welcome back to Term Four

Welcome back to the last term of 2006 at Appleby School. I trust that you have had a good break and a chance to enjoy the warmer weather.

I really enjoyed and got a lot out of the Ulearn ICT conference in Christchurch in the first week of the holidays. I learnt a whole lot of exciting things for us to work on in the future. I hope you have a chance to explore some of the new features on our blog like the clock, calendar, post-it notes and games links.

The highlights for the term already planned will be the class camp at Bridge Valley near Brightwater on Thursday/Friday 14/15 December. Further notes about our camp will come out shortly so put those dates aside for a couple of fun filled days.

Our focus for our thematic studies for the first part of the term will be on the topic ‘What makes Nelson unique’. We will be finding out about the activities, places, icons and people that make Nelson such a special place to live. If you know of a resource that would be appropriate we would enjoy sharing it.

No doubt you will also be reminded elsewhere that children need to bring a wide brimmed hat for outside play in this spring term. Please also ensure that drink bottles are regularly, thoroughly cleaned and named.

Please call at any time and join in some of the exciting activities we have planned for the term ahead.

New Blog Time Features

Hope you are all having heaps of fun in the holidays. The computer ULearn conference in Christchurch was really great and I learnt a whole heap of new things for the fourth term.

I am starting to plan for the class camp at the end of the term which I know you are looking forward to.

I have added a couple of new features to our blog to celebrate the start to daylight saving- a clock and a class calendar. The clock is always on the right side bar and the calendar is under the heading Appleby Links on the side bar. It will be handy for us to remember the dates for events that are coming up.

Also I have added a couple of new games' links on the sidebar as well.

Let me know how you are going in the holidays by leaving a comment or a post-it note :-)
