Here is a reminder of our Kids for Kids Christmas Concert with Suzanne Prentice on Wednesday night at the Annesbrook Church and Community Centre at 7.30pm. Tickets cost $16 for adults and $10 for students. Part of this money will got to World Vision. If you want us to book tickets for you you will need to get the money to school by Friday 27 October.

We have been practising three times a week and are getting to know the songs well. It will be a great night out.

Alyshia's Farewell Party

On Friday we had Alyshia's farewell party. Everyone had to bring something to eat. She is going to Ashburton to live on a farm. At the party we had cake, Raro, biscuits, sausage rolls, carrot sticks and dip. We hope the best for Alyshia in Ashburton.

Susa's birthday

On Friday it was Susa's birthday. Susa brought a very satisfying cake. It was delicious. The cake had lots of lollies around it. There were lots of lollies, marshmallows, fruit, biscuits and raisins. The party extreme!

Cefn Fforest Podcast

Through our podcasting we have met some children from Cefn Fforest Primary School in South Wales. They are sending us a travelling Welsh teddy. Here one of the children holds the teddy and shows the link between our two schools.

Two New Podcasts

We had the pleasure of being able to interview Dean Schneider, a New Zealand nature photographer, who had come to visit with us for an afternoon to learn more about the sorts of things we are doing with computers in our classroom. We were surprised to learn that Dean had taken the photographs for the school reader 'Helping the Hoiho' which was Dillon's favourite when he was younger. I think all NZ children would recognise that book.

To listen to our podcasts you can either click on this badge below or click on the link in the side bar.

We have been doing some great digital poetry. Digital poetry is when you write a poem and then take photos to illustrate your poem. We would have liked to make the photos move but some of the laptops were playing up. Gloria and Georgia did a great job of their poem about all the wonderful things Mrs Murphy does to help us around the school.

The Great Nelson Trolley Race

Kakapo Reading Group was asked to write a quick newspaper report about a Nelson Trolley Race. By chance I had a visit from another keen blogger teacher from Mapua

Room One at Mapua's blog

who lead me to this cool web tool that allows you to make a report look like the real thing. How is that for 'just in time learning'!

Halves

Our new topic for maths is fractions and we are starting with halves and we had to write out a question that the answer is half and this is one.

If I had two apples and I ate three halves how much would I have left?

Here is another one.

How much pizza would you have left if you ate two quarters?

Welcome back to Term Four

Welcome back to the last term of 2006 at Appleby School. I trust that you have had a good break and a chance to enjoy the warmer weather.

I really enjoyed and got a lot out of the Ulearn ICT conference in Christchurch in the first week of the holidays. I learnt a whole lot of exciting things for us to work on in the future. I hope you have a chance to explore some of the new features on our blog like the clock, calendar, post-it notes and games links.

The highlights for the term already planned will be the class camp at Bridge Valley near Brightwater on Thursday/Friday 14/15 December. Further notes about our camp will come out shortly so put those dates aside for a couple of fun filled days.

Our focus for our thematic studies for the first part of the term will be on the topic ‘What makes Nelson unique’. We will be finding out about the activities, places, icons and people that make Nelson such a special place to live. If you know of a resource that would be appropriate we would enjoy sharing it.

No doubt you will also be reminded elsewhere that children need to bring a wide brimmed hat for outside play in this spring term. Please also ensure that drink bottles are regularly, thoroughly cleaned and named.

Please call at any time and join in some of the exciting activities we have planned for the term ahead.

New Blog Time Features

Hope you are all having heaps of fun in the holidays. The computer ULearn conference in Christchurch was really great and I learnt a whole heap of new things for the fourth term.

I am starting to plan for the class camp at the end of the term which I know you are looking forward to.

I have added a couple of new features to our blog to celebrate the start to daylight saving- a clock and a class calendar. The clock is always on the right side bar and the calendar is under the heading Appleby Links on the side bar. It will be handy for us to remember the dates for events that are coming up.

Also I have added a couple of new games' links on the sidebar as well.

Let me know how you are going in the holidays by leaving a comment or a post-it note :-)

Doug the Digger Winners

At the final assembly of Term Three Gloria and Emily won the Doug the Digger colouring competition and each got a certificate and a safety T-shirt so they can be safe around heavy moving equipment. You can see how safe they are around the workmen who are developing the landscape area around the library.

Have a safe and enjoyable two week holiday from all of us in Moturoa.

Clever Jenny

Clever Jenny displayed our crazy creatures by hanging the them from the rafters but she mounted a few of them on the window. They look like they are really flying on their own and coming to land on the dolphin table!

Either go to the Appleby website, search in the Music Store of iTunes or click on the link below to listen to this week's podcast about our crazy art creatures.

Last week Fynn's parents gave us some excellent feedback and we really appreciate it so please let us know you are listening.

Tyler, Lara and Emily make a podcast

What an excellent effort the children made with their podcast this week.

Braden has become an expert and managed the whole procedure from the start to the completed podcast. The group managed to compose the photos, crop and enhance them as required, insert them into a podcast track, add graphics, load the USB microphones, rehearse and record the podcast and edit it as needed. The girl's voices were lovely and clear this week too. All without me being in the room! I will be able to retire soon and put my feet up. Maybe it went particularly well because the noisey Year Fives were at Kiwisports in Brightwater all day. LOL

To hear the podcast either click on the link below or go to the school website.

Jillian's Rabbit

It was a Monday when we had a fluffy surprise in a box saying Crunchies on it. But instead of a box full of Crunchies it was Jillian's new white fluff ball, in other words a rabbit. Jillian's rabbit's name is Marshmellow and it is a boy.

Moturoa Podcast Link

Our podcasts are now an integral part of the things we do in the classroom along with adding to our blog.

Here is a link to our podcasts.

Moturoa Podcasts

We haven't had much in the way of feedback from our podcasts as I believe some of you are having problems with your slow internet connections.

To make things easier for you to view our work we will give you a CD at the end of term with copies of the highlights of some of our digital learning.

Our Commonwealth Games Powerpoint Show, our Ngarua Caves Digital Stories and the podcasts made so far. If you have Quicktime on your computer you will be able to view the files without the aid of the internet.

Miss K visits Point England School in Auckland

What a day out in the big city! I had to get up really early to catch the 7:00am plane up to Auckland. All started out well but as we sat on the runway ready to go the pilot said that one of the propellors wouldn't start properly so we all had to get off and wait for a couple of hours for them to get another plane!

I took this photo of Mt Taranaki once the new plane got underway.

We got to Auckland a couple of hours late and missed out on seeing how the students from Point England School put together their daily TV broadcast. We got there to see the final part where their show is broadcast to the school. It was excellent.

Then we watched as Alosina, Charin and David recorded their latest podcast. They were excellent and I learnt a lot about how they managed and organised their recording. Great skills.

Here is a web link to listen to Point England Podcasts

And for the KPE kids a link to Appleby School's podcasts

After that we went to visit Room 15 where we were excited to find out the email I had sent to Point England school to encourage their podcasters had been printed out and children were looking to reply to it. I even had my photo taken with the printed email to prove it!

It was a great day out and I really appreciated the welcome we got from the Point England staff and children. Thank you so much Point England.

On the way home in the plane I took this photo from the plane window. In the distance you can see Mount Ruapehu and Mount Tongariro. What do you think that big triangle of shadow is on the land below. Write what you think it is in the comments and I will let you know if you are right on Monday!

Hayden's Remote Controlled Plane

Powered by Castpost
Today Hayden brought his remote controlled plane to school and showed us how the aerolons on the back surface of the wings made the plane go up or down and how he made the plane swoop and soar. He was really good at it. Here is a video of Hayden and the plane. The video is 2MB big so it may take a little while on dial-up but well worth the wait as you see hayden make the plane do fantastic loops. If you need to get Quicktime to view the movie follow the link below. When you click play and you see a big blue Q on the scren then you know all you will have to do is wait!
