An Artist Visits Moturoa

Today we had the privilege of being taught by Nelson artist Jo T. Jo taught us more about seeing deeply into our artwork and to enjoy and appreciate what we had accomplished. Miss K started off with showing us some interesting pictures and video of kakapo on the computer, then Jo showed us how to identify all the colours we could see of the kakapo and then she drew a stunning drawing in pastel.

After that we had a go with chalk pastel on black paper and drew these magificent roosters! Awesome!

Please come and see our work on the wall in the classroom.

New Viewing Map

I tried this map on my personal blog and enjoy seeing the little dots grow as the readership grows. The idea is that as people all over the world view our blog their location is marked on the map. The more someone views the blog the bigger the little dot grows. The wonders of technology.

Flight Links from England

Hi there!
I'm writing to you from the south of England! I also have an interest in planes, mainly old World War II ones. I have e-mailed Miss K to her home address some photos I took in 2004 when I was living on a small island off the English coast. They held an air show and I was thrilled to see so many old, but still working planes. Perhaps she will put them on your blog or let you see them via e-mail. Some sites which may interest you are

You can stay on it.
You can make it sit.
You can make it wear a crown.
You can connect it.

Welcome to Term Three

Welcome back to the third term at Appleby School. I trust that you have had a good break from homework and school lunches. One of the highlights of this term is going to be the help we will receive from Mrs V- a third year Christchurch College of Education student on her final school placement before graduation. She introduces herself…….

My name is Mrs V. I live in Lower Moutere with my husband Peter. I am a student from Christchurch College of Education, but I am studying through POLO, so I do my studies at home. My husband and I are potters and we have our own pottery and been potters for over 24 years now. This is my last teaching practice and I am looking forward to learning and teaching in Appleby School. I will be in Miss K’s class for five weeks. I love kids and enjoy working with them. I love singing, dancing and socialising. But most of all, I love cooking whenever I have time, reading, gardening and helping others.

Our focus for our thematic studies for the first part of the term will be on the topic ‘Flight’. We will be asking a lot of interesting questions about the principles of flight and be using a wide variety of resources including the internet to find answers to those questions. Hopefully we will be able to share our learning with the children of Wakefield School who are also studying the topic. If you know of a resource that would be appropriate we would enjoy sharing it.

Our web page on Flight

We also want to add more regular podcasts to our ICT skills. You can link to them through the school website or directly through the link below. You can also catch up on our recent podcasts about our shared reading and the production.

Moturoa Podcasts

Please call at any time and join in some of the exciting activities we have planned for the term ahead.

Moturoa Hit Counter

Having time to play in the school holidays has allowed me to make a couple of enhancements to our blog. We now have a site meter at the bottom of the blog that will register how many visitors the blog has had. It will register how many times someone has come to look at the blog even if they haven't left a comment. I might get sick of it but it might be quite fun to see how many hits it gets.

I trust that you are enjoying Nelson's calm weather when the rest of NZ cuts up rough.

Mac the Digger Man

Today, the last day of term two was very busy. We started off the day learning to LOOK, LISTEN and LEARN with Mac the Digger Man. He told us about the path he took when he decided he wanted to write a picture book. He started the book nearly ten years ago. When he finished telling us about the book we read the book together.

In this photo Jackson is holding the book as we read it along with the CD.

A lady from a company called Taylors donated a copy of the book to our school.

After that we all had a go at working a hydraulic digger to dig a ball out of the sand and put it in a bucket. It was mint.

Amanda & Don

Amanda and Don got married and now Tim is off to live in Australia. Lots of kids went to the Carver's place for a party on Thursday night. In this photo Nathan is sitting by the BBQ fire in charge of keeping it going.
Here Amanda and Don cut the wedding cake.

We wish them all the best for the future and hope that Tim will keep in touch through the blog. Good luck.

Have you read this cool book?

This book is about a pigeon that wants to drive the bus. The people in the bus keep on saying, "No! No! No! No! Noo!!!!!!
But when the bus driver comes back the pigeon can't drive the bus. You never know what he's going think about driving next- a car maybe or a train well none of them.

Shearwater Bell

Dong dong today our class just finished reading a fantastic book called Shearwater Bell. The Shearwater Bell is about a girl called Rona who has to go stay with her Grandma who she has never meet.

And while she was there she meets a boy called Wiri and together they go adventuring together.

This photo is a page of a very old diary that Wiri found.

We thought that the book was interesting and we all wanted to read it all in one day.

Shrubs, shrubs and more shrubs

We enjoyed planting our shrubs and will look after them well. First we had to get the shovel and dig a hole then we cut the plastic off the plant. After we tickled the roots means so the roots had a chance to grow before we put it in the hole. Once it was in the hole we filled it with dirt to the top and patted it down with our feet. We will water them every day unless it rains so the rain can do it for us and some sunshine and they will grow big.

Tim and Susa

Tim and Susa worked well to create the last of our digital stories. This one is 600KB. Remember you will need Quicktime to view them. The link for Quicktime is www.apple.com If you can't find your digital story on our blog I may have published it on our school website. Have a look at the link to our website to the right of this post.

Lara, Nathan and Jillian's Digital Story

What a great job the children did with their digital stories about the cave trip. This one is 800KB so will take a little while to download. But the time is well spent because the children narrate their adventures with plenty of expression.

Our videos are really awesome. They are only about half a MB each so they will take a little time to download but they are well worth it. It is great to have another outlet to publish our digital learning. Remember you will have to have Quicktime on your computer. Quicktime is a free PC or Apple download from www.apple.com

Dino meets a famous V8 driver

Dino had an exciting weekend racing carts at the Nelson Cart Club and came second to the South Island Champion in the Nelson Club Champs.

We also had a visit from Jason Richards. Jason started cart racing in Nelson and has moved on the racing V8 motor cars all over the place.

I felt astonished when I met him in person.

Jordan's experiment

For homework this week we had to pick a landform and talk about it. Jordan did a talk about volcanic eruptions. Then she made a volcano out of paper mache and made it erupt. It was so cool!!! We all enjoyed the talks.

Lara also did a talk on volcanoes and she had a experiment to go with it. Lara made her volcano out of clay and made it explode as well. It was awsome hearing all of the talks.

A new student teacher

Since Denise Lee has been with us she has been a big, big help with everything and we like her a lot. She has taught us a game called Buzzy Bee and we played a fun game of netball with her. Denise came from the U.K and came to New Zealand in 2001. She has been teacher-aide at Henley for three years. She came to our class on the last day of Term One when we went on the trip to town.

Moturoa goes to town!

To celebrate the last day of term we went to Nelson to visit the museum and study landforms. We got to look at a whole lot of different rocks. We even got to hold a lava bomb and a fossil that was 100 million years old! In this photo our new student teacher, Denise Lee, helped us learn about some different rock types.

After lunch we had a special treat. A visit to the movies to be the very first people in Nelson to see the Academy Award winning movie, 'March of the Penguins'. What an excellent movie! We would recommend it to everyone.

No Spelling Homework!

What a clever bunch of children I teach! Every Friday I give out the spelling homework for the children to learn throughout the week and test on Thursday. Because we were getting ready for assembly and it was a very busy day I forgot and not a single child thought to remind me! They ALL kept very quiet until the moment had passed and now it is too late to spend time learning words ready for tomorrow's test! I didn't know they could be so quiet!!!

Here is the text of an email attachment that I received which shows us the value of good spelling.
